It is May, ode to flowers and vegetables, with Spring in full swing, and flowers blooming… and lots of pollen in the air: it’s intoxicating 😵💫 In any case it’s May, let’s savor the beauty of nature!
Welcome to “Open Celery!” our monthly newsletter on plant-based recipes, stories and unsolicited advice made in Italy. It’s the fruit (and vegetable) of the collaboration between ottimoblog.com and appetibilis.net
Published in Italian and English (and happily edited and translated by Orsola)… at some point, we’d like to have it in podcast as well 😀

For me, May is the month of work because I start my six-month work commute in the gorgeous island of Sardinia.
So, for all intents and purposes, it’s a month of transition: from one season to another, from wintry eating – to keep us happily warm – to a refreshing summer style, or from one place to another (it’s one of the best time to visit (and enjoy) Rome and New York.
The weather is variable, with sunny days and downpours, and temperatures gradually rising 🫠 making picnic and beach time closer and closer. Even if can be hot, cold, or warm in the same day. After all, May is the gateway to summer… at last!
Needless to say, it is also the month in which we take stock of what should we wear at the beach: a bathing suit or a kaftan? 🫣
Do you remember the list drawn up on New Year’s Eve? Here we are!
In any case, having achieved any of those goals (or not), it’s kind of irrelevant. Let’s start with what we can do right NOW, to feel reinvigorated and light.
Whether it’s a reminder to drink more… water, eat more vegetables (perfect as a meal-breaker snack), making yourself a plant-based shopping list can be a great help in turning these goals into reality.

For instance, staying hydrated by drinking water and eating seasonal vegetables and fruits is on top!
Yes, lots of veggies and fruits available, May is the month where everything bursts out of the ground, while looking forward to the summer plants riot yet to come.
It’s all about savoring the flavors of the season and the beauty of the world around you: it’s basically a party for our taste buds 😋
“Pink, small, and punctual,/ Aromatic, low,/ Covert in April,/ Candid in May”
(Emily Dickinson “May-Flower”)
However, what if you are not drinking enough water? Did you know that you can compensate by consuming an adequate amount of vegetables (and some fruits)?
What if, on the other hand, you have doubts about what to do in order to eat and drink more “plant-based, and gluten-free”? Just check our recipes collection.
Meanwhile, Bloody Mary or Bunny Mary, anyone? Zero-alcohol, of course! 🥳
